Ludgate in Skibbereen is Ireland’s first rural digital hub, and for 5 years now been leading the way in creating a new model for successful Rural Digital Economies. with the target of facilitating the creation of 500 jobs in West Cork. We have been acknowledged by government as the template for rural regeneration.

It’s an exciting time for Ludgate as we enter the next phase of our development, which will see the opening of  a new ‘state of the art’ second location where many of these new companies will most likely be based.

As companies situated in the cities plan their growth and expansion, many are facing the challenge of the lack of affordable commercial space into which to expand. Within the cities, finding affordable accommodation for their employees also poses a challenge. With our 1GB connectivity, a lower cost of living, a ready supply of affordable housing, good quality education and an wonderful quality of life, Skibbereen, and West Cork more widely, offer a viable alternative to those seeking a second site location.

Building on the number of companies already located in the region, and those who have already established second site locations, Ludgate now wishes to recruit a Business Development Manager. The core focus of this role is to market and sell Skibbereen and West Cork more widely as a location of choice for companies, both newly-establishing companies and those seeking second site locations.  This is an exciting opportunity for someone who wishes to work to build a sustainable community and economy in West Cork.

The creation of this new post is part of Ludgate’s second phase of development, which is being accelerated by a €2 million grant from Enterprise Ireland, which will see us recruit four new posts in the coming 12 months, as well as refurbishing our second location.


Reporting to the CEO, your key responsibilities will include the following (not an exhaustive list);

  • Using your own networks as well as introductions provided, identify new business opportunities, including new markets and growth areas, to sell Skibbereen and West Cork as the business location of choice for indigenous and international companies;
  • Create multi-layered relationships in client companies to influence thinking and propagate the ideas around new working environments;
  • Work closely with key partners such as Enterprise Ireland, IDA, Cork County Council to develop strategies around recruiting companies to West Cork;
  • For companies (re)locating to the area, offer a concierge service and soft-landing platform, with easy access to the necessary local professionals and supports;
  • Establish and take responsibility for marketing plan;
  • Further develop and scale Ludgate’s unique TalentSpace database as an effective resource for prospective employers, devising a strategy to identify and attract home the West Cork diaspora.
  • Work with existing businesses in West Cork to capitalise on the 1GB connectivity to facilitate growth and job creation; and
  • Put in place reporting processes to the CEO, Ludgate Board and Enterprise Ireland.

We are flexible in relation to the location of the right person, be that Ludgate, Dublin, Cork or elsewhere in Ireland, but you will be required to be in Ludgate as the need arises.


Person Specification:

  • Highly motivated, driven and target focused;
  • An articulate and confident communicator;
  • Persuasive;
  • A networker;
  • Have a positive attitude; and
  • Able to work on your own initiative.


  • 3+ years proven sales/business development experience;
  • Demonstrated experience of selling high-value contracts involving multiple decision makers;
  • Strong ability to identify and close off new leads;
  • A strong relevant network;
  • Strong background in developing and managing commercial relationships;/
  • Proven track record of exceeding above and beyond targets; and
  • Excellent presentation skills.

Duration of Contract: 3 years initially, with the post to become self-financing after this period.

Salary: €65,000 OTE plus mileage
